Sponsorship: Hidden Figures Class Trip
As part of our "Investing in Our Future" initiative and our community service efforts, CCM supports local events at our community schools through sponsorship. When the blockbuster film "Hidden Figures" debuted we wanted to find a way to encourage young women to explore educational and career opportunities in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math also known as S.T.E.M.
The film Hidden Figures brings to light the untold true story of three African American women (Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughn, and Mary Jackson) who against all odds persevered and whose brilliant minds not only change the course of space travel but changed the course of history. We believe that our young girls need to see movies with such inspiration to show them that with hard work and the same perseverance these women showed, they too can realize there dream and make a profound impact on this world.
After collaborating with a fellow colleague, CCM along with Consolation Help & Outreach Center, Inc., a local non-profit organization, joined forces and sponsored ALL of the 8th grade girls at Henry County Middle School in McDonough, GA to a private screening of the film.
There was also an essay contest related to the film featuring 2 Grand Prizes of a laptop and laptop bag in which the contestants were charged to present a creative essay for the contest answering the following three (3) essay questions:
Describe a problem in the world that you would like to solve using STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) or Humanities skills.
Describe the ways in which YOU also might be considered a “Hidden Figure.” What unique talent(s) do YOU possess that may not be fully appreciated by the world around you?
Why is STEM or Humanities important to you and how can you see STEM or Humanities changing or improving your life?
Our efforts were simple.....to expose the future of America to an experience that could unlock their potential and for them to understand that with hard work, dedication, and determination the next Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughn, or Mary Jackson could have very well be sitting in the theater that very day!!
